Goodland softball denies Scott City a state berth
Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–After a 15-hour wait from Tuesday night to Wednesday afternoon, it took only 12 minutes and one inning to decide who would be heading to state out of the Class 4A, Division II Holcomb regional.
In the 11th inning, it would be the Goodland Cowgirls who would score the lone run of the inning, sending them to the Class 4A, Division II State Tournament in Emporia for the third time in four years, with a 12-11 win over the Scott City Lady Beavers.
After one out, Goodland would reach base on a walk, an error, and got the winning run on an RBI single from Jessie Duell, who was 0-6 in the game prior to the at bat, drove in Shay Smith. Scott City had one more chance, but a fly out and two strikeouts ended their hopes of going to state for the first time in program history.
For the final lines, Kaitlyn Daise was the winning pitcher, going 10 2/3 innings in the circle, giving up seven runs on 11 hits and had nine strikeouts. Brooke Drennan was 4-5 with four runs scored, and Demi Mitchek was 3-6 with two runs scored. Kaitlyn Roberts took the loss for Scott City, going all 11 innings, allowing 12 runs on 15 hits with five strikeouts. Macie Price was 4-5 with an RBI and scored three runs, while Roberts and Karen Hermosillo each drove in two runs and Nancy Wiebe had three RBI. Overall, the Lady Beavers committed five errors.
Scott City finishes their year at 13-7, which is their second consecutive winning season, the first time that has happened, and the third in program history. Goodland improves to 12-10, and will play in Emporia next Thursday. The Cowgirls are projected to be a seven seed.
