USD 457 Sends Letter to Parents on Netflix Series

Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) On Monday Garden City schools sent letters home to parents and guardians across the district regarding the Netflix show “13 Reasons Why”, the show is fictional and about a teenage girls who commits suicide.

The show, originated from a 2007 novel by Joy Asher, has become prominent after debuting on March 31st.

USD 457 Public Information Coordinator Roy Cessna says the school sent home the letter after seeing a rise in students trying to hurt themselves.

The letter tells parents about the show and motivates them to have conversations with their children about the show. District counselors are helping students who may be in need and are also working with Compass Behavioral Health.

The letter also states that people who are concerned about a student should report them to a teacher, counselor, principal or school resource officer. The suicide prevention hotline is 1-800-273-8255, or text 741741.
