Holcomb Takes District 16 Championship With a Solid Win Over Cimarron-Audio
Holcomb, KS (www.westernkansasnews.com) – Using their balanced attack directed by senior quarterback Tyler LaSalle, the Holcomb Longhorns moved to 8-1 on senior night and the final regular season game, plus the Longhorns won the 3A District Championship with their convincing victory over Cimarron 34-14. Holcomb jumped out to a 21-0 lead midway through the 2nd quarter after LaSalle had thrown for a couple of touchdowns and sophomore Blake Richmeier ran for another score, freshmen Juan Guerrero connected on the PAT’s. In the last 5 minutes of the first half, the Cimarron Bluejays would come back with an 80 yard kick-off return by junior Ty Clark for the touchdown, the kick was good and it was a 21-7 game. On the next series Holcomb incurred some penalties and ended up with a three and out. The Bluejays then went on a 60 yard touchdown drive culminating in the endzone with a 3 yard pass from sophomore quarterback A.J. Scott to senior running back Alex Neuschafer for the score, the PAT was good and it was a 21-14 game at the break. In the 2nd half Holcomb controlled the football for most of the 3rd quarter and scored late in 3rd period with the Lonhorns LaSalle scampering around left end for a 22 yard touchdown, Guerrero added the PAT and Holcomb had the comfortable lead at 28-14. The Bluejays never really challenged in the 2nd half and with a late interception by Longhorn defensive back Tate Mason on a pic 6 for the touchdown, the PAT failed and the Longhorns had District 16 wrapped up with a 34-14 victory.
