Scott City softball slams Lakin with a doublehader sweep
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On a day that was cold and breezy, Scott City and Lakin met up on the diamond Tuesday afternoon with identical records, and looked to start off the second half of their seasons with some confidence. The lone team that left Tuesday happy were the Lady Beavers, as they swept the Lady Broncs 13-2 in the first game, and 15-3 in the finale, with both games being called in the fifth inning.
Scott City 13, Lakin 2, Game 1 (5 innings)
It didn’t take long for Scott City to get on the board. They would put up two runs in the first inning, taking advantage of an error and a past ball to lead 2-0 after an inning. That score would hold up until the top of the third inning, when Lakin got on the board on a one-out solo home run by Kyndal Reed to cut the Lady Beaver deficit to 2-1. Scott City answered back with a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout by Macie Price to give them a 3-1 lead. The Lady Broncs in the next half inning pulled back to within a run at 3-2. After that, it was all Scott City in a grand way. They would load the bases on two walks and a single with nobody out in the bottom of the fourth inning. On 1-1 pitch, Krystal Appel would drill the ball over the left field fence for a grand slam, opening up the Lady Beaver lead to 7-2. Scott City would send six to bat in the fifth inning, and all six would score. What’s better than one grand slam? How about two of them. With two runs already in and the bases loaded with no one out, Bailey Latta ended the game with a grand slam over the center field fence to end the game at 13-2 due to the 10-run rule in five innings. Kaitlyn Roberts went five innings to get the win, scattering two runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts. Latta went 3-4 with three runs scored and drove in four runs. Krystal Appel also drove in four runs for Scott City and Kaitlyn Roberts had a pair of hits. Scott City finished with 11 hits. Beth McCombs took the loss for Lakin, stroking out one and walking seven in four-plus innings. Kyndall Reed had two hits and drove in a run, as the Lady Broncs finished with four hits in the game.
Scott City 15, Lakin 3, Game two (4 1/2 innings)
Scott City continued their dominance on the diamond in the second game, plating two runs in the first inning and adding five more in the second inning to lead 7-0 after two innings. In that inning, the Lady Beavers batted around, and took advantage of four walks and two errors. Lakin would show some life in the third inning, as they plated two runs on two hits in the inning, as Kaegan Bell and Kayla Calkins drove in runs to pull the Lady Broncs to within 7-2. As much momentum as they were attempting to build, Scott City quickly shut the door. In the bottom of the frame, the Lady Beavers sent 10 to bat, and added five more runs on two hits to extend their lead to 12-2. They added three more in the fourth, highlighted by a Macie Price two-run double. Lakin would fight back in the top of the fifth, hitting two doubles right in their first two at bats, scoring a run, before they were retired consecutively to end the game. Kaitlyn Roberts picked up her second win of the day, going all five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with a strikeout. Macie Price had two hits and four runs driven in, while Nancy Wiebe had one hit and drove in four runs. Price scored four times and Karen Hermosillo scored three times. Roberts also had three runs driven in in the second game. Scott City finished with five hits in the game, and were actually outhit 6-5 in the finale. Makennah Hernandez took the loss for Lakin, giving up 12 runs on four hits in three innings of work, and had two strikeouts. Kyndall Reed had two hits and scored twice for the Lady Broncs in the second game.
Scott City improves to 8-4 on the season, and will travel to Colby on Friday, while Lakin drops to 6-6 overall, and will host Hugoton next Monday.
