Scott City and Holcomb split GWAC doubleheader
Holcomb, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Holcomb and Scott City girls sports have seen plenty of each other during the 2016-17 season. With both schools meeting up in a sub-state final in volleyball and basketball, and each school sending a team to state, Thursday saw the rivalry continue on the ball diamond. In the end, it was a split of the doubleheader, as Scott City hung on to win 11-9 in the first game, while Holcomb took the finale 14-2, called after 4 1/2 innings.
Scott City 11, Holcomb 9, Game 1
Scott City attacked Holcomb early in the pitch counts, and overall in the seven innings, it was successful. In fact, it paid off early, as Bailey Latta put the Lady Beavers on the board early in the game on a two-run home run over the center field fence to give them the early 2-0 lead. They would add a run to make it 3-0, and kept that score until the bottom of the second, when the Lady Longhorns got on the board to pull to within 3-1. Scott City tacked on a run in the fourth and fifth innings, highlighted by a Macie Price solo shot over the left field fence to give the Lady Beavers a 5-1 lead. Holcomb answered with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the frame on Brynna McVey’s home run to pull to within 5-2. The sixth inning was owned by Scott City, as they opened their margin to 11-2, scoring six runs on five hits. It looked as though they were well in control of things. Then the bottom of the seventh inning came. Holcomb scored seven runs, without collecting a hit, and took advantage of three errors and six walks. They struck out looking to end the game, as Scott City hung on for the win. Bailey Latta picked up the win, going 6 1/3 innings, giving up nine runs on just three hits and had three strikeouts. Macie Price hit for the cycle, getting a double in the first, a triple in the third, a home run in the fifth, and a single in the sixth, as she drove in three runs in the process and scored three runs. Karen Hermosillo had four singles and drove in a run. Gabby Martinez, Lyndi Rumford and Latta drove in two runs. Rumford had three hits and picked up the save. Scott City finished with 15 hits in the game, but committed five errors. Molly Harrington took the loss for Holcomb, giving up 11 runs in seven innings pitched, with three strikeouts. Brynna McVey drove in two runs and scored twice, and Taylor Sleep also scored two runs.
Holcomb 14, Scott City 2, Game 2 (4 1/2 innings)
To say Holcomb picked up from where the left off in the first game might be an understatement. After sending 13 to bat in the seventh inning of the first game, scoring seven runs in the process, they scored eight runs in the bottom of the first of the second game and sent 12 to the plate in the inning. Scott City scored on an RBI groundout by Macie Price that scored Bailey Latta in the top of the first to give them the early 1-0 lead. After that, it was all Holcomb. The Lady Longhorns started off their scoring on a three-run home run over the center field fence by Alex Brungardt, giving them a 3-1 lead. They ended up scoring five more runs, and scored all eight first inning runs with two outs. Following a scoreless second inning, Holcomb added five runs in the third, giving them a 13-1 lead. The Lady Beavers added a run in the top of the fourth inning, and the Lady Longhorns added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning on the Molly Harrington double. Scott City went quickly in the fifth, as Holcomb salvaged a split in the doubleheader. Sydney Falconer got the win, going all five innings, allowing two runs on five hits with a strikeout, and threw only 43 pitches. Brungardt drove in four runs for Holcomb in the second game, and Brynna McVey scored three runs. Lyndi Rumford took the loss, going 2 1/3 innings, giving up 13 runs on five hits with a strikeout. Bailey Latta pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing a run on four hits. Holcomb outhit Scott City 9-5 in the second game.
Scott City is now 6-4 on the year, 2-2 in Great West Activities Conference play, and are scheduled to host Stanton County on Friday and Lakin on Tuesday. Holcomb is 8-2 overall, and 6-2 in GWAC play, as they’ll host Goodland next Thursday and Elkhart next Friday.
