Scott City baseball unable to complete rallies against Spearville

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–In the first four games, it isn’t the pitching that’s been the problem for Scott City, it’s been the inability to score runs. While there was some improvements from Friday, the Beavers were unable to manufacture runs, dropping the first game to the Lancers 8-4 in eight innings and fell 3-1 in the finale.

In the first game, Spearville would draw first blood with two runs in the top of the fourth, and added two runs in the top of the fifth. Scott City answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to get to within 4-2 after five innings. The score remained that way, until the Beavers tied the game in their last at bat at four after seven innings. However, the Lancers would respond in the eighth with four runs to rally for the 8-4 win in the first game. Todd Morris pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Drew Duff took the loss, giving up four unearned runs in the eighth inning, and struck out one batter. Scott City finished with seven hits in the game. Aaron Hoopes drove in a run and had two hits. 

The last game of the night turned out to be a pitchers dual. Scott City got on the board first in the bottom of the first. Spearville would take the lead for good with two runs in the fourth and added an insurance run in the seventh. Justin Faurot had two of the Beavers four hits, which were a double and a triple. Aaron Hoopes drove in the lone run in the bottom of the first inning, scoring Faurot. Gustavo Gonzalez took the loss, going all seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits with only one walk and striking out four.

Spearville is 2-0 on the year, and will host Holcomb on Thursday, while Scott City drops to 0-4 on the season and will host Lakin on Monday, and travel to Syracuse on Tuesday.
