NWS: Small Tornadoes on Christmas Day Expected to Set Record
Dodge City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) It did not seem possible, but Christmas Day produced weather you would typically see in the springtime for Western Kansas. National Weather Service Meteorologists Mike Umscheid says three small tornadoes did minor damage to two farms.
This one factor alone made the difference in seeing this type of activity.
Peak winds reached 70-80 MPH. Umscheid believes the activity will rewrite the record books.
Records at NWS have been kept on such events since 1950.
