Sarah Ann Gerber, 81 died Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at Presbyterian Manor in Wichita, Kansas. She was born May 19, 1935 in Finney County, Kansas the daughter of Daniel A. & Agnes E. (Englert) Ohmes.
Sarah grew up in Garden City where she attended West Point Grade School. After graduating from St Scholastic Academy in Canon City, Colorado, she attended Garden City Community College and St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City. On August 23, 1954, she married Norbert L. Gerber in Garden City. A homemaker, Sarah worked various jobs in Garden City. She was the owner and operator of Sarah’s Preschool and Daycare for 8 years, retiring in 1987. Sarah was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella, and the Altar Society. She served as a 4-H leader for 20 years, a past board member and volunteer at the Emmaus House, and volunteered at the coffee shop at Garden Valley Retirement Village. Sarah loved spending time with her family, and she enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, crocheting, sewing, cooking, and her dogs and cats.
Survivors include 10 children George Gerber of Wichita, KS, Agnes (Charles) Brisendine of Garden City, KS, Richard (Donna) Gerber of Pratt, KS, James Gerber of Garden City, KS, Steven (Laurie) Gerber of Garden City, KS, Theresa (Bruce) Seiler of Colwich, KS, Michael (Tavane) Gerber of Wichita, KS, Ronald (Kelly) Gerber of Colwich, KS, Philip Gerber of Yuma, AZ, and Norbert L. (Laurel) Gerber, Jr. of Sandy, UT; 2 sisters Barbara Dinges of Holdrege, NE and Theresa Morgan of Garden City, KS; 18 Grandchildren; 14 Great Grandchildren; and 1 Great Great Grandchild. Sarah is preceded in death by her husband Norbert who died on June 11, 1990. She is also preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers John Ohmes, Richard Ohmes, and Paul Ohmes; and a sister Mary Zeorlin.
A rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 6 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 7 also at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City with Fr. Charles Seiwert as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and from Noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family request memorials given to the Emmaus House or to St. Mary School Endowment Fund both in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
