Shirley D. Tunis, 85 died Saturday, October 15, 2016 at her home in Garden City. She was born April 25, 1931 in El Dorado, Kansas.
Shirley lived in various places in central Kansas with her family throughout her childhood. She moved to Lakin, Kansas where she attended middle school and high school. After graduating from Lakin High School in 1949 she attended Colorado A&M in Ft. Collins. Shirley then moved to Garden City. On January 4, 1953 she married Melvin Tunis in Lakin, Kansas. They lived on the family farm in Haskell County until 1974 when they moved back to Garden City. She has lived in Garden City since. Shirley worked as owner and operator of The Good Times Fun Center in Garden City in the mid 1970’s. She also owned and operated Granny’s Antiques and Shirley’s Estate Jewelry. She was a member of Garden Valley Church and she enjoyed dancing, traveling, antiques, crocheting, knitting, and her dogs.
Survivors include a son Kevin & wife LaVera Tunis of Kerrville, Texas; a daughter Melva & husband Tony Kinkel of Tullahoma, Tennessee; a brother Terry Prince of Garden City, Kansas; 4 grandchildren Joseph Tunis, Bret Bascue, Tiffany Tunis, and Ashley Tunis; a step-grandson Kellen Kinkel; and 2 great grandchildren Joslyn Tunis and Roger Tunis, and another on the way. Shirley is preceded in death by her husband Melvin; father Paul Wesley Dawson; her mother Elsie Irene Brooks Dawson Prince; and her step-father Bert Prince.
A Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Garden Valley Church in Garden City with Rev. Steve Ens and Rev. Steve Cloud officiating. Graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22 at the Dudley Township Cemetery in Satanta, Kansas. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday and the family will be at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to visit with friends.
