On top of the world; Demon soccer wins first ever state title
Dodge City High School soccer coach Saul Hernandez won a state title as a player. But as he put it, winning one as a coach was so much sweeter.
Joshua DonJuan scored the only goal for Dodge City in the first half, and the Demons topped Olathe East 1-0 on Saturday to claim the program’s first ever state championship.
“This was a result of all the hard work these guys put in,” Hernandez said. “From the summertime until now; these guys worked their tails off.”
And it showed.
Dodge City finished the year at 21-0; the only unbeaten team in Kansas en route to becoming the first Western Kansas school to ever win a state title in soccer.
“As a coach, this one is more special because I get to help shape these young men,” Hernandez said. “It’s a great feeling to bring a state championship to Western Kansas.”
