Scott City and Ulysses renew rivalry tonight
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It has been one of the best rivalries over the years in southwest Kansas, and tonight should be no differently. Two teams, who have reshuffled their lineups in the middle of the season, take 2-2 records in to the 7 pm kickoff at Darner Field in Scott City.
Ulysses snapped a two game slide last Friday night, giving Colby their first loss of the season in a 35-21 win. The Tigers led 7-0 after the first quarter, and trailed 14-7, after the Eagles scored two quick touchdowns in less than 20 seconds before halftime last week. Ulysses would score 28 unanswered points in the second half, en route to their first league win of the season. AB Romero rushed for four scores, as the Tigers rushed for 308 yards in the game, while holding Colby to a season-low 82 yards for the game. Romero moved to running back last week, after starting at quarterback for the first three games of the season. Zac Anderson made his season debut under center, and passed for 97 yards and a touchdown.
Scott City moved to .500 as well, with a 35-7 win at Hugoton last Friday night. The Beavers were tied at seven at halftime, then put up 14 points in each quarter of the second half, en route to their seventh straight win over the Eagles. Scott City’s offense scored on three of their first four possessions of the second half. Wyatt Hayes rushed for 110 yards and three touchdowns, while having six and a half sacks on defense. Scott City’s defense forced two turnovers, and held Hugoton to minus-nine yards rushing. Nick Nowak picked up his first career interception, and returned it 30 yards for the score for the Beavers, who have had back to back games with a pick six.
The Beavers lead the all-time series 37-30-1, and have won eight of the last 10 games. Last year, both teams entered with 5-0 records, and 4-0 league records. Scott City shutout Ulysses 35-0 in 2015, and the last win for the Tigers in the series was in 2013, when they defeated the Beavers 25-6.
