Ethel Lorene Lewis Tucker Floyd

Ethel Lorene Lewis Tucker Floyd departed this world September 21, 2016 to be with her Lord and two small sons. Ethel was born in Pratt County, July 5, 1923 to Irvin and Effie Hardin Lewis. The family moved to Stanton/Hamilton County when Ethel was about three years old. She went to the Mitchell School until she was in the third or fourth grade, the family then moved back to Pratt County. She graduated from Byers High School in Byers, Kansas. After graduation, she lived with Mr. and Mrs. Lutz in Pratt and worked at Dillon’s grocery store, in the bakery department. Ethel’s family moved back to Stanton/Hamilton County and she followed about one year later. She then worked in the War Bond office, selling ration slips. It was about this time that she met Wendell O. Tucker. Ethel and Wendell eloped and were married April 7, 1944. They lived with their respective parents until the end of May when Wendell graduated from high school. To this union four children were born. 

Ethel was a farm wife and worked at the grocery store in Manter until it closed. Ethel is most remembered for her work as floor manager at Emery’s Drug. She worked at Emery’s for twenty-five years and taught many high school girls to make coke floats, milk shakes and ice cream sundaes. After Wendell’s death she worked for another 1-2 years, then moved to Hutchinson. She was active in the Methodist Church there. Ethel married Eugene Floyd there October 20, 1986 at which time she moved to Garden City. Ethel belonged to the Rebecca Lodge in Johnson, and was active in the Cosmos Club, and had recipes published in their cookbooks. 

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Stanley Ray and Irvin Larry; husband, Wendell O. Tucker; her second husband, Eugene Floyd; one son-in-law, Jack Harris; and one sister-in-law, Annie Lewis. 

Survivors include daughter, Judith Harris; son, Wendell Lee and Sally Tucker; son, Van Lynn Floyd; two brothers, John Lewis and Irvin “Jr” and Nell Lewis; six grandchildren, Delaina and Dennis Downes, Darris Harris, Wade and Tammy Tucker, Ward and Elizabeth Tucker, Jennifer Tucker, Dylan Tucker, and Robin and Dan Rollins; eleven great-grandchildren, Logan and Anessa Downes, Lucas Downes, Laken Downes, Jaylen Tucker, Jordyn Tucker, Morgann Haaga, Gavin Haaga, Iris Tucker, Arlo Tucker, Dakota Rollins, and Mercedes Rollins. There are many nieces, nephews and cousins who will also miss her, as well as a host of friends, which includes her two caretakers for the past seven years Mary Pineda, and Joan Frazier. 

Funeral service will be 10:00 AM on Friday, September 30, 2016, at the Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church in Johnson with Pastor Tom Scott officiating. Ethel will be buried in the Stanton County Cemetery alongside Wendell and her two sons. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Phoenix Homecare & Hospice in Wichita, KS, or other hospice of choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home, PO Box 715, Johnson, KS 67855.
