Back in the win column! Scott City blows out Cimarron

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing in unfamiliar territory, Scott City returned home to face the Cimarron Bluejays in hopes of putting the first two games behind. It only took 45 seconds to do that. The Beavers used a balanced attack, and forced five Bluejay turnovers to dismantle Cimarron 52-7 Friday night at Darner Field, giving coach Jim Turner his first win as Scott City’s head coach.

Scott City scored on their first three possessions of the game, and took only three plays to score. With 11:15 remaining in the first quarter, Jarret Jurgens found the end zone from 41 yards out to make it 7-0, following the Gustavo Gonzalez extra point. The Beavers added two more scores in the first quarter, as Bo Hess hit Marshal Faurot on a 36-yard touchdown pass play with 6:52 left in the opening quarter to make it 14-0, after the Gonzalez PAT. Wyatt Hayes scored the third touchdown of the opening quarter on a 34-yard run with 4:01 left, and Scott City led 21-0 after the first quarter.

The Beavers added one score in the second period, as Hess connected with Hayes on a 62-yard screen pass to make it 28-0 with a little over five minutes left, which included another Gonzalez PAT.

In the third quarter, Scott City forced a running clock by scoring 17 points. It started with 6:42 left in the third frame when Hess found Kevin Aguilera with no one around him in the end zone on a 28-yard pass. Hess was scrambling around and Aguilera had no Bluejay within 15 yards of him. Gonzalez booted in the extra point to push the lead to 35-0. He would also add a 24-yard field goal with 4:25 left in the period, following a Cimarron fumble on the kickoff return. Scott City (1-2) would add a defensive touchdown on the night with three minutes remaining in the quarter, as Kyle Cure took the Dylan Harrison interception 40 yards to the end zone, and Gonzalez made it 45-0 Scott City with the extra point.

With a running clock in the fourth quarter, the Beavers closed their scoring for the night with a Jess Drohman 20-yard run with 11:51 remaining, and Gonzalez’ extra point kick made it 52-0. Cimarron (1-2) found the end zone late in the game with around 2:27 remaining, as Nick Ast connected with Payton Marshell on a two-yard pass, and Jesus Aguilar booted in the extra point to finish off the scoring at 52-7.

Cimarron committed five turnovers, three coming on interceptions. Nick Ast was 10-15 for 108 yards with a touchdown and interception. Blake Neuschafer had five catches for 54 yards, and led the team in rushing, with 12 yards on 1o carries. The Bluejays had a total of 23 yards rushing and only 131 yards of offense.

Scott City saw Bo Hess go 7-11 for 186 yards with three touchdowns, and completed passes to four receivers.Justin Faurot had three catches for 38 yards, and Wyatt Hayes led in yardage with one catch for 62 yards and a touchdown. He also had 88 yards rushing on 10 carries and a touchdown. The Beavers rolled up 375 yards of offense, with a balanced attack that included 189 yards on the ground. Scott City had only one turnover in the game, making them even in the plus/minus turnover category this year.

Scott City travels to Hugoton to take on the Eagles next Friday night. Hugoton dropped to 2-1 after a 24-21 loss to Colby. Cimarron hosts 3-0 Meade, who won 58-8 over Southwestern Heights. Other GWAC finals saw Holcomb shutout Ulysses 52-0, and Goodland fall to Clay Center 28-6.
