Scott City volleyball splits matches in Colby
Colby, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Playing in their second set of matches in three days, the Scott City Lady Beaver volleyball team split a pair of matches on Thursday in their triangular. Scott City won their first match against Colby 27-25, 23-25, 25-18, and fell to Hoxie 25-20, 25-23.
In their first match against Colby, the Lady Beavers trailed late in the first set 23-19, before closing the set on an 8-2 run to take the opening set. They led 13-6 in the second set, before Colby chipped back into the set and took it 25-23. The third set saw Scott City trail the Lady Eagles midway through 13-12, and scored the next eight points to take a 20-13 lead and never look back to win 25-18. Macy Berning had 11 kills and four service aces, and Brandi Shearmire added three aces for the Lady Beavers.
Their final match was a tough one, facing the No. 8 ranked team in Class 1A, Division I in Hoxie. The opening set went back and forth, only to see the Lady Indians pull away late to win the first set 25-20. Scott City took an early lead in the second set, and led most of the way, leading 18-11. Hoxie stormed back, closing the second set and match on a 14-5 run to win 25-23. In the loss, Emily Smith and Kiana Yager had five kills apiece, while Jalynn Habiger and Clarissa Ratzlaff had a service ace each.
Hoxie swept Colby 25-11, 25-19 in the final match.
Colby is 0-4 on the year, and will play in the Liberal Tournament on Saturday. Hoxie is 10-1 on the season and will participate in the Dighton Tournament on Saturday, while Scott City is 6-2, and has a week off before hosting LaCrosse in a dual Thursday night, which will be senior night.
