Albert James Baier, 84 died Friday, September 9, 2016 at Homestead Health & Rehabilitation Center in Garden City. He was born April 10, 1932 in Finney County, Kansas the son of Antone & Eleanor (Prewo) Baier.
Albert has lived most of his life in Kearny County and Finney County, Kansas. He attended Holcomb schools. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1954 during the Korean War. He served mostly in Alaska. Albert returned to Finney County where he began working for Lee & Woolman Construction Co. He then worked for the Acme Harding Glass Co. Then, for the next 40 years, Albert worked as a farmer where he farmed in Finney County and retired in 2006. Albert enjoyed gardening, reading western books, playing pool and shuffleboard, and visiting with his buddies. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. of Garden City, the American Legion, an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Finney Senior Center Citizen Association.
Survivors include 5 brothers Robert & wife Charlotte Baier of Garden City, Tony Baier of Garden City, John M. Baier of Garden City, Gary & wife Sherry Baier of Holcomb, and Bill & wife Ginger Baier of Garden City; 2 sisters Mary Ann Metts of Joplin, Mo. And Dorothy Fairchild of Okmulgee, Ok.; and many nieces and nephews. Albert is preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers Richard Baier and Thomas Baier; and 2 sisters Anita Savolt and Carolyn Benton.
A rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 12, 2016 also at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City with Fr. Charles Seiwert as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City with military graveside rites conducted by the Honor Guard of the Kansas Army Reserve National Guard. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and from Noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
