A good start; Lady Beavers sweep triangular in Oakley

Oakley, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–One word on the back of the Scott City coaches shirts is “ambition”. After Friday’s triangular in Oakley, the 2016 version showed the ambition to change the tide of the past seasons. The Lady Beavers shook off a slow start in their first set, and cruised to a pair of sweeps against Wallace County 26-24, 25-9 and Oakley 25-8, 25-22 to start their season 2-0 for the first time since 2012. They also won their first match of the season for the first time since 2013.

In their first match against Wallace County, Scott City trailed by as many as five points throughout. The Lady Beavers would pull to within a couple points, only to see the Lady Wildcats push their lead in the first set to 24-21, and on the cusp of taking the first set. After a Scott City timeout, the Lady Beavers put together the final five points to take the first set 26-24. That set up what would be an all-out domination in the second set. Scott City gave up the first couple points of the second set, but they controlled the rest of the match, blowing out the Lady Wildcats 25-9. Macy Berning led the charge with nine kills, and four service aces. Taylor Goodman also had four aces in the match. The Lady Beavers produced 21 kills and nine aces.

The final match of the day was against Oakley, who won their first match against Wallace County 8-25, 27-25, 26-24. Scott City picked up from where they left off in the previous match, and dominated the Lady Plainsmen 25-8. They would start off well in the second set leading 10-3, only to see Oakley go on a 10-2 run to take a 13-12 lead midway through the second set. The Lady Beavers would counter with a 9-4 run of their own to lead 21-17. Following a Lady Plainsmen timeout, Oakley would rally to tie the set at 21. Scott City eventually put them away, scoring four of the final five points of the match to win 25-22. In the second set, the Lady Beavers had 39 kills, led by Emily Smith’s 14 and Macy Berning’s 13. They also had 13 aces, led by Berning with 5 and Taylor Goodman with four.

Scott City will have 13 days off, as they will head to Ulysses for a dual on Thursday, September 8.
