Edward Joseph Streckfus, Jr.
Edward Joseph Streckfus, Jr., 88 died Friday, July 22, 2016 at the Kearny County Hospital in Lakin, Kansas. He was born July 27, 1927 in Salina, Kansas the son of Edward Joseph Streckfus, Sr. and Mary Eleanor (O’Shea) Streckfus.
Edward grew up in Assaria, Kansas. He graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School in Salina. After high school, Edward served in the United States Navy during WWII from August 1945 to August 1946. After the service, he returned to the Salina area. He began working at Graves Ranch. He later worked as a welder for JR Manufacturing before starting his own businesses. Edward then owned and operated Streckfus Spraying Service, Streckfus Dirt Construction Co., and Streckfus Custom Cutting. In 1973, he moved to Hugoton, Kansas for a short time before moving to Deerfield, Kansas. He then moved to Lakin, Kansas in 1977 and has lived in Lakin since. After moving to Hugoton, Deerfield, and Lakin he continued working with his dirt construction and custom harvesting businesses. Edward was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lakin and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing his guitar.
On June 22, 1948, he married Viola Ingree Oberg in Salina, Kansas. She died on June 29, 2006. Edward is also preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter Katherine Marietta; and two sisters Clara Riedel and Katherine Scanlan.
Survivors include his five children Mary Elizabeth & (Dan) Petrie of Garden City, Kansas, Dolores Susan & (Michael) Fitzsimmons of Oswego, Kansas, Rosemarie Louise & (Fred) Heistand of Columbus, Kansas, Edward Joseph & (Maria) Streckfus III of Lakin, Kansas, and John & (Brenda) Streckfus of Garden City, Kansas; 18 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
A Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lakin. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 29, 2016 also at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lakin with Fr. Rene Labrador as Celebrant. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Salina, Kansas. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin. The family request memorials given to St. Anthony Catholic Church, High Plains Retirement Village, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital all in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Lakin.
