Scott City boys, Garden Plain girls take home 3A Regional titles

Cimarron, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On a cooler Friday afternoon in Cimarron, 16 boys and girls teams took to the track and field at the Class 3A Regional. While teams were looking for personal records or season bests, the ultimate goal was to place no lower than fourth in an event.

Scott City’s boys and girls teams had quality finishes for the area on Friday, as the boys picked up another win, scoring 98 points, 15 better than runner up Chaparral. The Beaver boys are taking all three relays, and had several individual champions, including Cooper Griffith in the discus, Drake McRae in the 300m hurdles, Jack Thomas in the 3200m run, and Jess Drohman in the 800m run. The 4×800 relay also took home the top spot. Lakin swept the top three in the long jump, en route to a third place finish. Jeff Gilleland won the 200m dash. Cimarron’s Nick Ast qualified in both hurdles races, and won the 110m high hurdles.

On the girls side, Garden Plain edged out rival Conway Springs by 1.5 points. Scott City finished in third, as they also qualified all three relays, and got top performances from Makaela Stevens in the 3200m run, and won the 4×400 and 4x800m relays. Lakin finished fifth, and got another one-two performance from Kaylee Line and Robin Ritsema in the high jump, and Erica Carter won the shot put.

The top four in each event qualify for the Class 3A State Track & Field Championships Friday & Saturday, May 27-28 at Cessna Stadium in Wichita.
