Scott City softball thumps Russell

Hays, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was a cold and damp day on Monday at TMP Marian, as the Scott City Lady Beaver softball team looked to continue their best season in school history. Standing in the way were the Russell Lady Broncos. Russell came in with a 1-19 record, and despite what their record shows, have played a tough schedule. 

The Lady Broncos put a scare into Scott City taking a 2-0 lead after a half an inning. After that, it was all Lady Beavers, as they cruised to a 16-2 3A Regional opening win in a game that lasted 4 1/2 innings due to the 10-run rule after five innings. 

Russell scored two runs on two hits in the top of the first inning, only to see Scott City bounce back with a pair of runs to tie the game in the first. The Lady Beavers would take over for good in the second inning. A four-run innings with two hits, capped off by a run scored by Bailey Latta gave Scott City a 6-2 lead. After tacking on two runs to take an 8-2 lead into the fourth inning, the Lady Beavers would put the game away for good. They sent 13 to bat and scored eight runs on six hits. The first nine batters would reach base and eight scored. Scott City would retire the Lady Broncos in order in the top of the fifth, as they picked up their first regional win since 2011. 

Kaitlyn Roberts picked up the win, pitching four innings, giving up two runs on two hits, all in the first inning. She had two strikeouts on 64 pitches. Nicole Latta came in and retired the side on only seven pitches in the fifth. Bailey Latta drove in three runs and had three hits, including two bunt singles. Madison Orr drove in three runs on two hits. Scott City outhit Russell 14-2, as the Lady Broncos committed four errors compared to one for Scott City. The Lady Beavers left three runners on base, while Russell left four. Kaylee Radke took the loss, going four innings and giving up 16 runs on 14 hits, throwing 104 pitches. Kyleigh Kasper drove in one of Russell’s two runs.

Scott City will take on TMP Marian on Tuesday at 4:30 in the 3A Regional semi-final round. The Lady Monarchs were pushed to the very end, as they held off Lakin 6-4. The third game of the day was suspended due to rain in the top of the fourth inning, with Plainville/Stockton leading Larned 4-0. They will resume play at 1 pm on Tuesday. Southwestern Heights awaits the winner in the semi-final round.
