Ron graduated from Wiley, Colorado High School and attended College in Portland, Oregon. He returned to Lamar and moved to Garden City in 1978. He started working for Burtis Motors in 1978 as a Sales Representative and was promoted to Used Car Sales Manager. He later became a Partner in the business and managed the Parts and Service Department for many years.

Ron was committed to serving people and his community, especially Garden City Community College. He was Chairman of the Kansas Automobile Dealers Association in 1977, Member of the Finney County Economic Development Corporation Board since 2005, Kansas Association of Community College Trustees since 2005, Member & Past President of Garden City Community College Trustees since 2005 & a Longtime Member of the Southwest Kansas Pro-Am Committee.

Earlier in life Ron enjoyed competitive softball, playing with Kinney Glass and Dodge City Sand. He later bowled and played golf. He was involved with starting the Barbershop Quartet groups, Front Street Four of Dodge City and Gents of Garden in Garden City.
