The USD 457 Board of Education approved the appointment of Drew Thon as the activities director/associate principal at Garden City High School for the 2016-17 school year.  Thon will be transferring from his position where he has been teaching social issues in the Freshman Academy at Garden City High School.

“It is a dream that has come true for me in moving into this role as the Activities Director for the Buffaloes,” said Thon.  “Garden City High School has one of the finest traditions in the state of Kansas and with the leadership of our coaches and administration we will continue to push towards greatness.  I am eager to get started in this position and I sincerely thank Dr. Karlin, Mr. Nordby, Mr. Stoppel and the School Board for this opportunity.”

Thon, whose duties will officially begin July 1st, has experience as the assistant activities director at Garden City High School since 2013.  He was previously the athletic/activities director at Wichita County High School in Leoti, Kansas before coming to Garden City.

“I am excited to see where Drew can lead our activities programs,” said GCHS Principal Steve Nordby.  “He has demonstrated a great work ethic, and through his interview process, has identified a few areas that he would like to improve immediately.  I have confidence that he will be able to make those improvements happen.”

He is taking over the duty from Jarrod Stoppel, who has served in the interim position as activities director/associate principal at GCHS for the 2015-16 school year.  Stoppel will be transitioning back to the associate principal position, which he held at Horace J. Good Middle School before taking the interim position at Garden City High School.

Thon is a native of western Kansas and received a bachelor’s of science degree in secondary education from Kansas State University and a master’s degree from Fort Hays State University.
