Scott City baseball splits doubleheader at Spearville; track places high at Smoky Valley
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–As mother nature forced postponements on Friday in far western Kansas, everything east of Scott City went on as scheduled.
Baseball earns first win at Spearville
After playing a rugged schedule to begin the season, the Scott City baseball team finally picked up a win on Friday against the Lancers. In the first game, a six-run second inning propelled the Beavers to their first win of the year in an 11-5 victory. Scott City led 7-0 after 2 1/2 innings only to see Spearville get back into the game, cutting the deficit to 7-4 after six innings. A four-run seventh secured the win for the Beavers, as Gustavo Gonzalez went the distance, allowing five runs, one earned, on six hits. Scott City had seven hits, as Aaron Hoopes had thee of those, and drove in a pair of runs. Kyle Cure and Justin Faurot also drove in a pair of runs. The finale saw the Beavers fall 8-7 in a game where they committed seven errors. Spearville scored all eight of their runs in the first three innings, as Scott City was unable to play catch up, despite outhitting the Lancers 9-4. Aaron Hoopes continued his hot hitting, as he connected on four hits and drove in three runs, including his second home run of the day, and third of the season. Todd Morris gave up eight runs, only one earned, on three hits in 2 2/3 innings. Scott City is now 1-10 on the year, and will play at Lakin on Tuesday at 5 to finish their suspended game from April 5, where Lakin was leading 6-0 heading into the third inning.
Scott City boys track co-champs, girls third at Smoky Valley
The Scott City boys track team was still not at full strength on Friday in Lindsborg, but their efforts were good enough to put them in a first place tie with Buhler with 91 points. Smoky Valley was third with 80. Event wise, the Beavers had several top performances, including a win by Marshall Faurot in the 300m Intermediate Hurdles (42.59), Cooper Griffith in the Discus (163-3), and in the 4x400m (Jess Drohman, Wyatt Kropp, Wyatt Hayes, Adrian Ruelas 3:35.02) and 4x800m (Jack Thomas, Hayes, Ruelas,
Drohman 8:32.77) Relays. Runner-up spots went to Marshall Faurot in the High Jump (6-2) & Pole Vault (13-0), Drohman in the 800m Run (2:08.90) and Thomas in the 3200m Run (10:37.59). Thomas was third in the 1600m Run (4:47.69), and Faurot was fourth in the 110m High Hurdles (:15.63). Hayes finished fourth in the Triple Jump (38-9.75) and 5th in the 4oom Run (54.63). Kropp was 5th in the 200m Dash (24.62) and Conner LeBeau was fifth in the 3200m Run (11:17.83).
The girls had a good day as well, placing third with 63 points. McPherson won the meet with 70 points, and Smoky Valley was second with 68. First place finishes went to Paige Winderlin in the 400m Dash (1:02.73), Makaela Stevens in the 3200m Run (12:50.76), and the 4×800 Relay (Makaela Stevens, Cami Patton, Dulce Ayala, Paige Winderlin 10:27.66). Patton was second in the 800m Run (2:37.20) and Stevens was third in the 1600m Run (5:52.29). The 4x400m Relay team also placed third (Emily Smith, Cami Patton, Dulce Ayala, Paige Winderlin 4:23.44). Finishing in fourth place on Friday were Madison Braun in the Javelin (111-10) and Cayleigh Ramesy in the Pole Vault (8-6). Liz Eikenberry was fifth in both the Javelin (111-9) and Discus (103-11) and Ayala was sixth in the 800m Run (2:39.39).
The Scott City track team will host the 80th Annual Scott City Relays on Tuesday, April 19, beginning at 9:30 am. There will be 18 teams in two divisions. In the 1A-2A Division, Dighton, Healy, Hoxie, Ness City, Oakley, Rawlins County, Stanton County, Wheatland-Grinnell and Wichita County. The 3A-4A Division will be comprised of Colby, Goodland, Hoisington, Hugoton, Lakin, Phillipsburg, Scott City, Syracuse and Ulysses.
