Scott City Softball run rules Liberal in doubleheader

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–For eight days, the Scott City Lady Beavers had plenty of time to feel the frustration over a couple tough losses in Goodland to open the season. Friday in Scott City, the Lady Beavers took it out on Liberal, playing error-free ball, and recorded 13-1 and 11-1 wins over the Lady Redskins in games that lasted four and a half innings.

Scott City 13, Liberal 1 (4 1/2 innings) Game 1
After a scoreless inning and a half, the Lady Beavers exploded for nine runs in the second inning, sending 13 batters to the plate in that inning. They never let up in the next inning, adding four more on the board before Liberal tacked on their lone run in the top of the fifth inning. Scott City got a great pitching effort from Kaitlyn Roberts, who ended up facing just one over the minimum of five innings of pitching. Yes, the Redskins had three hits, but the Lady Beaver defense helped out by turning two double plays. Roberts struck out four batters and never gave up a walk on only 56 pitches. Krystal Appel drove in two runs, and had two hits, while Nicole Latta also drove in a run on two hits. Scott City ended up with nine hits. Liberal had four errors in the game. Alize Tatum scored their lone run in game one on an RBI groundout. Kaleah Chaloupek took the loss, giving up 13 runs on nine hits with four strikeouts in four innings pitched.

Scott City 11, Liberal 1 (4 1/2 innings) Game 2
Scott City continued their momentum from the first game, scoring four runs in the first inning. However, Liberal tried to make it interesting in the second inning, by leading off with a double, and added a triple by Sandra Arriaga two batters later to score Alize Tatum to cut the deficit to 4-1. That would be the closest the Lady Redskins would get. Starter Nicole Latta retired 11 of the final 12 batters in the game. The Lady Beavers helped shorten the game by scoring seven runs in the third inning. Latta went the distance, throwing 53 pitches in five innings, allowing a run on two hits with three strikeouts. Scott City finished with 11 runs on seven hits, and left only two on base. Amanda Kough drove in three runs and had two doubles and a single, while Krystal Appel drove in two runs and had a triple while scoring twice. Alexia Torrez took the loss, pitching 3 2/3 innings, giving up 11 runs on seven hits with only one strikeout. Kaleah Chaloupek pitched 1/3 of an inning. Tatum and Arriaga each had a hit for Liberal.

Scott City is 2-2 on the year, and will be on the road at Southwestern Heights Tuesday, and Stanton County on Friday. Liberal dropped to 2-4, and will face Great Bend at home on Tuesday.
