Opening heartbreak; Scott City softball swept in Goodland
Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Thursday’s doubleheader started off with a bang for Scott City in their season opening game against the Goodland Cowgirls. However, the ending results left them sour. The Cowgirls picked up their first wins of the year, rallying for an 8-7 win in game one, and 18-7 win in game two.
Goodland 8, Scott City 7 Game 1
Scott City rushed out to the lead early on, scoring three runs in the first and second innings to lead 6-1. They tacked on an additional run to make it 7-1. The Cowgirls would start their rally with a run in the fourth, and scored six in the sixth to take their first lead at 8-7 and never trailed again. Scott City pounded out eight hits in the loss, as Amanda Kough and Jordan Miller each had two hits and a run driven in. Kaitlyn Roberts gave up eight runs on 10 hits in six innings in the circle, and took the loss.
Goodland 18, Scott City 7 Game 2
All the momentum the Cowgirls had in the first game continued in the second game. Goodland gave up an early run in the top of the first, but responded with 11 runs in the bottom of the first, and never looked back. They would score in each of their four at bats, adding a run in the second and three in the third and fourth innings. Scott City recovered by scoring three runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The game ended in the fifth inning due to the 10-run rule in effect. Goodland blasted out 22 hits in the second game, while the Lady Beaver had seven runs on seven hits.
Scott City is 0-2 on the season, 0-2 in GWAC play, and will host Holcomb on Friday, April 8. Goodland is now 2-2 overall and 2-0 in league play, as they will play at Hugoton Thursday, April 7.
