Rally caps on; Broncbusters overcome nine-run deficit to beat Frank Phillips

Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com)-When you’re down 9-0, there’s no magic formula to crawl out of that inauspicious hole.

Instead, you keep digging, which on Wednesday afternoon, helped Garden City avoid a disastrous loss in the middle of one of the best seasons under Chris Finnegan.

Conner Reynolds drove in seven runs including an eighth-inning grand slam that helped the Broncbusters battle back from a deep hole to beat Frank Phillips 14-11 at Williams Stadium.

“The two best things that came out of today was Dillan Feurestein came in and gave us six outs and put two zeros on the board,” Finnegan said. Then Conner hit a big grand slam for us. But we have a long way to go.”

The Plainsmen plated three in the first; four in the third and two in the fourth before Garden City (26-8) finally awoke.

Brooks Benson hit a solo home run before Reynolds slapped a run-scoring double and Jesse Gonzalez scored on a passed ball to make it 9-3. Billy Clark then followed with a sacrifice fly.

Garden City scored five more runs over the next two frames to cut the lead to three before Reynolds big knock in the eighth.

Nick Ulmer’s day didn’t last long for Garden City on the bump, allowing six runs on five hits in 2.6 innings of work.
