Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com)-After nine seasons, David Upton was officially fired as Garden City High School girls basketball coach on Monday.
The Board of Education approved the termination of David Upton’s contract as the Garden City High School head girls’ basketball coach during its regular board meeting on Monday, March 7th, 2016, the district released in a statement. A search will begin immediately to hire a new coach for the 2016-2017 school year.
The Buffaloes are coming off a 7-15 campaign, which concluded with a 30-point loss to No. 1 Wichita South in the substate finals on Friday. It was the first losing season for Garden City since finishing 10-11 in 2009.
“I thought from a loyalty aspect that I would have one more year,” Upton said Monday night. “I was definitely shocked. I had heard things all season long. But until you really hear it, then you don’t know.”
The Buffaloes were 109-88 during Upton’s tenure, which included one state tournament berth back in 2009. It was the first time Garden City had qualified for the dance since 1989. His signature win came last season when the Buffaloes knocked off No. 4 Kapaun Mt. Carmel, who finished in the top four and knocked off Wichita South.
But only three times over his nine years did the Buffaloes reach the substate finals
