Scott City wraps up regular season with a split with Goodland

Gooodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Both Scott City and Goodland were looking to not only pick up wins in their regular season finale, but also take some momentum into sub-state play next week. Tuesday night at the Max Jones Fieldhouse, it was the Cowgirls using runs of 10 and 11 to defeat Scott city 50-33, while the Beaver boys never trailed and spoiled Goodland’s Senior Night with a 54-23 win.

Girls
Scott City felt like they had a lot to prove after their 48-34 loss to the Cowgirls 48-34 January 29. Just like the first game, the Lady Beavers scored the first points of the game. The difference, Goodland scored 10 straight during a nearly five-minute stretch of the first quarter. After the Cowgirls took a pair of 10-point leads in the first quarter, Scott City (6-14, 4-6 GWAC) could only get as close as seven points. Goodland led 16-9 in the first quarter, and doubled up Scott City 8-4 in the second eight minutes of play to take a 24-12 halftime lead. What hurt the Lady Beavers in the middle of the game was a scoring drought. A 9:03 drought from the 4:48 mark of the second period to the 3:45 mark of the third frame dug too deep of a hole to dig out of. The Cowgirls led by as many as 21 late in the third quarter at 37-16. After leading 37-18 going into the final eight minutes, Goodland (11-9, 7-3) built up a 44-21 lead with 4:34 remaining. The Lady Beavers would gain momentum, outscoring the Cowgirls 12-6 down the stretch, as Goodland has won six of their final eight games of the season, and sweeps Scott City for the second straight season. Hannah  Ferguson had a game-high 17 points for the Cowgirls, as they were 13-19 from the foul line. Kiana Yager led the Lady Beavers with nine points, as they were only 4-14 at the charity line.

Boys
In a game that was a mismatch on paper coming in, it turned out to be a mismatch on the court. Scott City never trailed jumping out to an 18-5 first quarter lead, and used a 9-0 run in the final 3:27 of the opening period. Justin Faurot, who came in averaging just under four points a game, put up the final seven first quarter points, hitting three of his first four shots. The Cowboys would have a six-minute stretch of the first and second quarters without a point. Trailing 20-5, Goodland (5-15, 2-8 GWAC) scored nine of the last 14 points of the first half, cutting the deficit to 25-14 at the break. The Beavers ended up with a scoring drought of a little over four minutes. To begin the third quarter, the Cowboys would score four of the first six points to cut it to 28-19 with 6:40 left in the period. They were unable to get it any closer, as Scott City (15-5, 7-3) was able to start pulling away. In the final 10:23 of the game, the Beavers uses a 22-2 run to take full control of the game. Goodland did not score for a 9:13 stretch in the third and fourth quarter. During that stretch, Scott City scored 18 unanswered. Ten Beavers scored in the game, as Drake McRae led the way with 11 points, while Bo Hess and Justin Faurot added 10. Goodland was led by Luke Avila with seven, all in the second quarter. It was the Cowboys’ second lowest point total of the year, while it was the second fewest points allowed by the Beavers this year.

After Tuesday, it looks like the Scott City girls will play at Cimarron on Tuesday, March 1, while the boys will host either Syracuse or Lyons on Monday, February 29, in the opening round of the Lakin Sub-State. Goodland will host a Class 4A, Division II Sub-State March 3-5, as the Cowgirls are projected to take on Holcomb, while the Cowboys will more than likely play Holcomb.
