Weekend Wrap: Dodge City Girls 1-2 in Newton, Hays Beats Demon Boys
Newton, KS (westernkansasnews.com) It was a roller coaster weekend at the Newton Invitational Tournament for the Dodge City High School girls basketball team and unfortunately it ended on a decline in losing the consolation championship game to Bishop Carroll 46-24. The good news is Dodge City had a chance for 5th in the eight team field, while two years ago Dodge finished last in the field.

Girls Highlights against Newton
In the opener, Tia Bradshaw and Jessie Harshberger scored 16 each, but it was not enough as host Newton (8-4) took a 14-13 lead at the end of the first quarter and outscored Dodge 29-18 over the next two quarters to win 57-47. The Railers were led by center Payton Roberts who scored 22 points. Desi Kernal, Jada Berry and Payton Roberts combined for 22 of the team’s 37 rebounds and had a 10 rebound advantage over the Lady Red Demons on the board.

Friday, Dodge City had their biggest win since late December when they beat Stanton County 60-13, by taking care of Kapaun Mt. Carmel 58-28. At one point in the second half, Kaylyn Maple scored 8 in a row including two threes during that span. Tia Bradshaw led the Demons with 13, Jessie Harshberger had 11.
Saturday’s Highlights with Bishop Carroll
Saturday, the Red Demons were held to their worst point total of the year losing 46-24 to Bishop Carroll. The Eagles outrebounded the Demons 27-17 and shot 48 percent for the game while Dodge hit only 24 percent. Josie Allen and Ashley Carillo both scored 8 each leading the Eagles, Jessie Harshberger was limited to six points.

Dodge City (8-5, 3-0) will jump back into WAC play Tuesday night when Garden City comes to town.
Boys Story
In a must win game to determine who has the upper hand for control of the WAC, Hays was able to get the edge by winning 62-59 on Dodge City’s home floor. The win gives Hays an 11-2 record and 4-0 the first time go around in WAC play.
Boys Highlights
Isaiah Nunnery was taken out early with two fouls. The Indians used two big threes from Drew Young at the end of the first quarter and picked up where Nunnery and Shane Berens typically lead the team.
Young had a team high 12 points and Keith Dryden poured in 11. The Indians largest lead was 14 at 43-29 before the Demons cut the lead down to single digits over the last two minutes. Caden Walters knocked down three 3’s in scoring 13 points and adding 7 rebounds. Dayton McGroarty had 15 points and 5 boards, 4 offensive.

Dodge City falls to 5-8 overall, 1-2 in the WAC. The Red Demons have lost 5 of their last 6 games.
