Bernice F. Chappel
Bernice F. Chappel, 94 died Friday, December 4, 2015 at her home in Garden City. She was born March 27, 1921 in Indian Creek, Missouri the daughter of Bernard & Ella (Hays) Buckman.
Bernice grew up and attended school near Indian Creek, Missouri. On September 11, 1938 she married Raymond Francis Chappel in Indian Creek, Missouri. They moved to Hickok, Kansas in 1946. They later moved to Garden City in 1948 and have lived in Garden City since. A homemaker, Bernice also owned and operated C&M Laundry Service in Garden City for several years. She later worked as a dispatcher for the Kansas Highway Patrol. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Garden City and the Daughters of Isabella. Bernice enjoyed golfing, traveling, cooking, gardening, collecting recipes, clothing fashion, and shopping.
Survivors include four sons Bernard Chappel of Garden City, Albert Chappel of Garden City, John Chappel of Garden City, and Tom Chappel of Deerfield, Ks.; four daughters Dixie Darlene Mai of Aurora, Co., Mary Ella White of Garden City, Debbie Chappel of Garden City, and Darla “Dede” Jefferson of Alexandria, La.; a sister Phyllis Bichsel of Stoutsville, Mo.; 20 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and 6 great great grandchildren. Bernice is preceded in death by her husband of 76 years who died on October 19, 2014. She is also preceded in death by a daughter Phyllis Louise Chappel; and her step-father John I. Tewell.
A rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 6, 2015 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 7, 2015 also at St. Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Charles Seiwert and Fr. James E. Baker as Celebrants. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. There will be no calling hours. The family requests memorials given to St. Mary School in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
