Scott City dismantles Lyons

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Efficiency was the key for Scott City on Tuesday night, as it only took one play for the Beavers to get on the board, and cruised to a 54-0 win over the Lyons Lions at Darner Field. 

Scott City started on their first offense play. With 10:12 left in the first quarter, Bo Hess connected with Drake McRae on a 56-yard touchdown pass. Tre Stewart’s extra point made it 7-0 Scott City. Nearly three minutes later, the Beavers took advantage of short field, as Wyatt Kropp capped off a short four-play drive with a five-yard run with 7:18 remaining in the period to push the lead to 14-0, with the Stewart PAT. Scott City had their longest drive on the next series, that went seven plays and 53 yards. Cooper Griffith punched it in from six yards out with 3:25 to go in the opening period to make it 20-0.

The Beavers added three touchdowns and a field goal in the second quarter. Kropp found paydirt for the second time on the night from four yards out with 10:19 left before halftime. Stewart’s extra point kick made it 27-0 Scott City. Less than a minute later, Griffith recorded his first pick-six of the year on a 28-yard intercetpion return to push the score to 34-0, including Stewart’s extra point. After another Lions three and out, Scott City takes advantage of short field, and gets a Griffith 16-yard run with 6:08 left before halftime, and Stewarts PAT made the score 41-0 Beavers. Stewart would cap off the scoring with a 34-yard field goal into the wind as time expired to give Scott City a 44-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Scott City (10-0) would score 10 points in the third quarter, mainly with backups in the game. Nick Nowak picked up his first touchdown of the year on a 42-yard run with 9:52 left in the third quarter, and Gustavo Gonzalez kicked in the extra point to make it 51-0. That promped a running clock for the remainder of the game. With approximately 1:12 left in the third quarter, Tre Stewart kicked in a career-best 39-yard field goal to cap off the scoring at 54-0.

Lyons (3-7) had only three possessions that ended in Scott City territory, as they closest they penetrated was the Beaver 26 yard line. The Beaver defense limited the Lions to three first downs in the game.

For Scott City, nine different players carried the ball. Cooper Griffith led the attack with 79 yards on seven carries and two touchdowns. Wyatt Hayes added 51 yards on seven carries, while Wyatt Kropp added two touchdowns on five carries and 44 yards. The Beavers finished with 315 yards on the ground. Bo Hess was 3-4 passing for 89 yards and a touchdowon pass. Drake McRae had 56 of those yards on one catch with a touchdown, as the Beavers amassed 404 yards for the game. 

Lyons had three different quarterbacks used. Terek Smith was 4-6 for 32 yards, while Tyler Edwards was 4-6 for 6 yards with an interception, and Drake Link was 1-2 for five yards. Their leading receiver was Blaine Shea, who had five grabs for 16 yards. The Lions had 25 yards of rushing. Link had 23 of those yards on 16 carries and Shea had six rushes for 35. yards. Lyons had 88 yards of offense. 

With the win, Scott City won their 12th straight Bi-District game going back to 2001, and has won 10 games in a season for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons. The 10-0 record for Scott City marks the seventh time they’ve accomplished that feat in the last 10 years. 

Scott City will host Norton on Saturday afternoon at 3 at Darner Field. The Bluejays shutout Marysville 37-0 in their Bi-District game on Tuesday, and are 8-2 on the season. This will be the second straight year these two teams have met up in the Regional round of the playoffs. Scott City won last year’s game 55-20.
