District title on the line as Scott City visits Cimarron
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–One thing that is guaranteed tonight is that both Scott City and Cimarron have punched their tickets to the Class 3A playoffs. The only uncertainty is who will be the District 16 champion. That answer will be determined tonight as the Beavers and Bluejays battle for the right to play at home on Tuesday in the Bi-District round of the playoffs, as well as take home the district championship trophy.
Scott City enters tonight’s game with an 8-0 record overall, and a 2-0 record in district play. Last Friday night in Lakin, the Beavers recorded their second straight shutout in three games with a 55-0 win in a game that was over early on. Scott City scored 35 first quarter points and did not surrender one first down in the game. The 2015 version of the Beavers have progressed in the right direction week by week, as they have defeated opponents by an average of 39-8 in their first eight games. Cooper Griffith is 16 yards shy of rushing for 1,000 yards for a second straight season, while also leading the defense with 85 tackles. Quarterback Bo Hess is close to eclipsing the thousand-yard mark passing this year, as he has thrown for 917 yards and 11 touchdowns. Scott City averages 380 yards per contest, while only surrendering around 151 per game.
Cimarron is at the same mark as one year ago record wise, as the enter tonight’s contest with a 6-2 record and also 2-0 in district play, following their 58-24 road win at Southwestern Heights last Friday night. The Bluejays are under first year coach Jason Stithem, who was on Garden City High School’s coaching staff the previous three years. Despite having their fourth head coach in the last four seasons, Cimarron has not missed a beat this year. Their two losses have come to top three teams in their respective classifications, a 38-8 loss in week one to Holcomb (No. 3 4A, D II), and a 35-18 loss to Meade in week four (No. 1 2-1A). Nick Ast and Kaleb Neuschafer lead the Cimarron offense, as they have put up an average of 45 points a contest, while giving up 21 points a game through the first eight games.
The winner of tonight’s game will be at home on Tuesday, while the loser will head on the road. Both teams will either face Hoisington or Lyons, who are playing for the 3A, District 15 title tonight in Lyons.
