Wanda Holmes, 72 died Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born October 9, 1942 in Lebanon, Missouri the daughter of Russell and Grace (Koch) Baker. Wanda was later adopted by Eddie Barnes in 1945.
As a young child, Wanda moved with her family to the Garden City area. She graduated from Pierceville High School in 1960. A homemaker and seamstress, Wanda enjoyed sewing, painting, reading, crossword puzzles, beadwork, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Cornerstone Church in Garden City and a member of the Twins Mother’s Club.
On June 4, 1960, she married Johnnie Holmes, Jr. in Garden City. He survives. Other survivors include a daughter Johnetta (Bill) Hebrlee of Garden City, Ks.; sons Wesley (Tenille) Holmes of Valley Center, Ks., Brent (Vickie) Holmes of Edmond, Ok., Brian (Stacy) Homes of Hutchinson, Ks., and John (Mary Harget) Holmes of Garden City, Ks.; a sister Vivian (Chris) VanVleet of Shawnee, Ks.; 16 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and 3 great grandchildren on the way. Wanda is preceded in death by her parents; a grandson Ryker John Hebrlee; 5 brothers Ronnie Barnes, Lynn Barnes, Eddie Wayne Barnes, Michael Barnes, and Bobby Barnes; a sister Joquetta “Jody” Perry; and a grandson-in-law Victor Diaz.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. A reception and celebration of Wanda’s life will follow at Cornerstone Church in Garden City. The family requests memorials given to the Finney County Historical Museum Education Department in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
