Scott City corrals Cowboys

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Going in to Friday night’s game, Scott City had spurts of looking like a dominant team, and had moments of a young team developing. Much like the previous game, the Beavers would use a 21-points second quarter to dismantle the Goodland Cowboys 42-14 at Darner Field.

In the first two games, the Scott City Beavers did not record one sack. They made up for it in week three, and did so in a big way. The Beaver defense recorded 13 sacks and scored the ball game’s first points in the first quarter. Kevin Lozano intercepted a Nolan Deeds pass, and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown with 3:57 remaining in the first quarter. Tre Stewart’s PAT made it 7-0 Scott City after the first quarter. The Lozano pick-six was the second in as many weeks for the Beavers.

For the second straight week, Scott City (3-0, 2-0 GWAC) opened the game up and scored 21 points in the period. In the first minute of the second quarter, Wyatt Kropp punched it in the end zone from a yard out, and Stewart’s extra point made it 14-0. Just 61 seconds later, Cooper Griffith scored on a 44-yard run around the right side, and the Stewart extra point pushed the lead to 21-0. The Beavers would tack on one more score in the first half. With 6:05 remaining in the period, Bo Hess connected with Kropp on a 17-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 27-0, and Stewart’s point after try made it 28-0 at the break. 

Scott City scored 14 more points in the third quarter, scoring on their opening drive. Wyatt Kropp found the end zone on the ground for the second time on a 15-yard score with 9:22 left in the third frame to make it 35-0, with the Stewart extra point. The Beavers scored once more to make it 42-0. Cooper Griffith punched it in from four yards out with 4:50 left in the period and Stewart’s extra point finished off the scoring.

Goodland (1-2, 0-2) would score a pair of touchdowns in the final quarter with a majority of second team players on the field for Scott City. Levi Archer scored from six yards out with 7:38 left in the game, and Joseph Miller ran in the two-point conversion to make it 42-8. Miller would close out the scoring with 3:08 left, on a three-yard run to make it 42-14, as the two-point conversion failed.

Scott City got a season-high 395 yards of offense, with 280 coming on the ground. Bo Hess was 4-10 for 155 yards with a touchdown pass and an interception. The leading receiver was Drake McRae, who had one catch for 60 yards. Cooper Griffith rushed for 155 yards on 15 carries and two scores. Wyatt Kropp added 86 yards on the ground on 13 carries and two touchdowns.

Goodland’s Levi Archer threw for 256 yards with an interception. Luke Avila caught 10 passes for 162 yards, and Evan Peter was the leading rusher with 13 yards on three carries. The Cowboys rushed for minus-68 yards in the game and finished with 188 yards in the game.

In the win, the Beavers have now won 12 straight in the series, which started in 2006. Scott City will travel to Holcomb to face the Longhorns Friday night. Holcomb suffered their first defeat last Friday in a 34-20 loss to Ulysses. Goodland returns home to take on Hugoton, who defeated Colby 27-8 for their first win of the season.
