Ulysses spoils Scott City’s season opener

Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–After a longer wait than usual for the start of the season, the Scott City Lady Beavers took the court for the first time in 2015 Thursday night, hosting GWAC nemesis Ulysses. The Lady Tigers, who have dominated GWAC foes over the past three seasons, have had a handful of matches under their belt coming into Thursday’s dual, and used that to thwart off the Lady Beavers in four sets 25-15, 25-13, 25-27 and 25-16.

The first and third matches saw Scott City play with quite a bit of energy. In the first set, the Lady Beavers led 12-10, when Ulysses went on a tear, closing out the set on a 15-3 run. The Lady Tigers controlled the second set from the get go and took the set convincingly 25-13. However, the Lady Beavers would not go away easily. Scott City led for a majority of the set, and took a 24-21 lead to get set point, only to see Ulysses score four straight to give them match point. The Lady Beavers rallied for three straight to close out the set to win 27-25. In the fourth set, it seemed the momentum was heavily in the favor of the Lady Tigers from the onset, and they ended up winning 25-16, despite a late rally attempt for Scott City.

Scott City will have a busy week next week, as they head to Great Bend on Monday for a triangular with Great Bend and Smoky Valley, a trip to Leoti on Tuesday for a quadrangular with Goodland, Lakin and Wichita County, a quadrangular on Thursday at home against Colby, Hoxie and Oakley, and the Liberal Invitational Tournament on Saturday, September 19.
