State Board of Education Looks For Answers to Teacher Shortage

Dodge City, KS (westernkansasnews.com) The State Board of Education had a meeting earlier this week on the problem of losing teachers statewide. Some are leaving for other states while others are bolting the profession altogether. Board Member Sally Cauble of Dodge City is concerned about what lies ahead.

Cauble complimented a former Garden City Superintendent for reaching out.

The Board approved a waiver this week for six school districts including Hugoton receiving designation last year for being an innovative school district to hire people as teachers who did not have a license. Cauble there are some restrictions.

Cauble voted no because she wanted this waiver extended across Kansas.

Even with this flexibility it will only affect a handful of teaching positions in Hugoton.  The changes for hiring these teachers without a waiver are only in effect one year.
