Beavers baseball completes sweep of Goodland
Goodland, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It took five weeks to complete, but in the end, it was worth it for Scott City. On Wednesday, the Beavers made the track back to Goodland to face the Cowboys in a game two of a doubleheader that was scheduled for April 2. Mother Nature has played a factor in games over the last couple weeks, and this game was no exception, as Scott City hung on for a 7-6 win in six innings over the Cowboys. The game was called after the sixth inning due to rain. It is considered a full game since at least five innings were complete.
Scott City and Goodland scored a run apiece in each of the first two innings. After a four-run third inning by the Beavers, the Cowboys scored two in the third and three in the fourth to take a 6-5 lead. Scott City picked up two timely runs in the top of the sixth, and held on for the 7-6 win. Sloan Baker went 3-4 at the plate with three runs scored, while Gustavo Gonzalez and Hunter Braun collected two hits. Drew Duff drove in two runs for the Beavers on one hit, as Scott City collected 11 hits in the game, and outhit the Cowboys 11-7. It was a combined effort for the win on the mound for the Beavers, as Gonzalez, Justin Faurot and Baker each pitched two innings, giving up six runs, four earned, on seven hits with nine strikeouts. Goodland got two hits and two RBI from Dawson Ensign.
Scott City is now 4-14 overall, 3-5 in the GWAC, and are scheduled for a doubleheader at 4 pm Thursday in Ulysses, and will face Lyons/Chase on Monday afternoon at 3 pm in their regional opener. Goodland falls to 6-13 overall, and finished 1-9 in league play, and will resume a game in the bottom of the first inning with TMP-Marian in Colby Thursday afternoon. They will take on Holcomb on Tuesday in Colby for their regional opener.
