Three more Buffs ink national letters of intent

Listen to entire press conference

Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com)-Monday marked a day both for celebration and sadness; the reality that three of the most important athletes to roam the halls at Garden City in recent memory, were inking their national letters of intent and preparing for life without their brown and white uniforms.

With her mom Tonya in the seats, a woman who’s forging a battle much tougher than putting pen to paper, Jaymie Bernbeck kept her composure while announcing her plans to play college basketball at Garden City Community College.

“Garden City is a great opportunity for me,” Bernbeck said. “I will get to play more out on the perimeter and improve as a guard.”

The senior, who was named Western Athletic Conference player of the year in 2014, missed the first half of this past season after offseason ACL surgery. She came back to average 9.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. She was named to the all-conference first team, making it the third straight year she was named All-WAC.

“I need to improve my outside shot,” Bernbeck said. “That’s one area of my game that needs to get better.”

Bernbeck finished her career with 783 points; good for fourth on the all-time scoring list.

Caleb Tramp

In the history of Garden City High School, athletes like Caleb Tramp don’t come along too often. That’s what made Monday’s signing more of a coronation than a goodbye.

Tramp officially signed his letter of intent to play for Brady Trenkle at Garden City Community College, a choice he’s been set on for the last two months.

“This is my home,” Tramp said. “He (Trenkle) told me where he could get me, and that sold me.”

Tramp’s senior season cemented his standing in Buffalo basketball lore. He averaged 16 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest, scoring a career-best 29-points in a two-point loss to Olathe North during the Hays Shootout.

“I need to be more consistent on my outside shot,” Tramp said. “I believe staying at Garden City will allow me to improve that aspect of my game.”

During his senior campaign, Tramp was named the WAC player of the year. He was also a Topeka Capital Journal All-Class honorable mention.

Tevin Briscoe

History will be following Tevin Briscoe right out of the Garden. The senior, who signed a letter of intent to wrestle at Division II Nebraska Carney, is coming off one of the most successful three year runs in program history.

“They’ve had a lot of success throughout the years,” Briscoe said in answering questions about his college choice. “I feel they can make me a better wrestler.”

It’s hard to imagine it getting much better for a kid, who just two months ago became the first Buffalo wrestler to win three straight individual state titles. More impressively is that he did it at three different weight classes (132, 138 and 145).

“I’ve learned so much from my coaches,” Briscoe said. “But now I will be going up against grown man. The challenge will be much greater.”

Briscoe finished his career with a 142-14 record. He’s excelled in all aspects of high school life, including off the mats where in the classroom he maintained a 3.2 grade point average.
