Piha named new GCHS volleyball coach
Garden City, KS (westernkansasnews.com)-When Shandra Sanders stepped down as Garden City High School volleyball Coach 18 games into their 2014 season, some expected the worse-case scenario: finish the year with an interim coach, and then begin the search once they had completed a losing season. Well the latter never happened, which made the search that much easier.
Leading the Buffaloes to a 14-5 finish in the second-half of the season, the administration did their due diligence, eventually hiring Abby Piha as the new girls volleyball coach at Garden City High School.
“I’m definitely pumped to have the opportunity to lead the girls this year,” Piha said. “We’ve got some unfinished business to take care of. I’m really excited to get the ball rolling this summer.”
Piha began her career at Wamego High School as the freshman coach back in 2009. She moved to Garden City in 2011 and took over the middle school program. After coaching the junior varsity squad for one season, she took a year off to start a family before taking over for Sanders midway through the 2014 campaign.
“I look forward to some great volleyball in the fall,” Piha said. “And for many years to come.”
