Holcomb Basketball Teams Sweep Conference Openers in Colby

Colby, KS (westernkansasnews.com) The Holcomb boys and girls basketball teams were able to take both ends of their conference openers on the road at Colby Friday night.  The Lady Longhorns won 45-38 while the boys used a 35-9 run after leading 10-8 and never looked back in defeating Colby (0-6, 0-2) 78-34. 

Girls Highlights

The Holcomb girls (3-2, 1-0 GWAC) scored the first eleven points of the game, coughed up the lead after being outscored 15-2 and then utilized a 9-0 run in the third quarter to take the lead for good.  Holcomb senior Taylor Deniston led all scorers with 17, sophomore Zoe Engler added 12 and freshman Eboni Sapien 11. 

After the game head coach Nathan Novak was pleased with the way his team played on both ends of the court. 

Colby’s Shaila Giebler had 14 in the loss.  The Lady Eagles fall to 1-5, 1-1 in the GWAC.

Boys Highlights

In the boys game after a sluggish start, Holcomb started playing well both inside and outside offensively.   Christian Merz had 3 three pointers and finished with 14 and Connor Van Cleave had 17 of his 19 in the first half to spark the 78-34 win.  Head Coach Chad Novak was happy with the way his team shared the ball.

Colby senior Ashton Russ had 13 points in the loss.  Holcomb has a perfect 5-0 record and number one ranking in 4-A (DII) heading into the holiday break. The Longhorns next game is on the road at Cimarron Tuesday, January 6.
