Kansas State corrals Cowboys

Manhattan, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Oklahoma State shocked the Wildcats early on with a touchdown on their opening drive. After that, No. 11 Kansas State dominated the Cowboys, and rolled on to a 48-14 victory Saturday night in front of the second largest crowd in Bill Snyder Family Stadium history at 53,746.

Early on, it was the Tyreek Hill show for the Cowboys. Hill, the former Garden City Broncbuster standout, got the start at running back for Desmond Roland, who did not make the trip. He was in on six of the eight plays on their lone scoring drive of the night, as he capped off the drive on a two-yard run with 11:48 left in the first quarter to lead 7-0, after the Ben Grogan kick. Kansas State (7-1, 5-0 Big 12) turned the momentum in their direction, as Morgan Burns returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards to tie the game at seven, capped off by the Matthew McCrane PAT. The Wildcats would get an interception from Dante Barnett on the next Cowboy series. Charles Jones would punch it in out of the “Wildcat” with 4:16 left in the first quarter on a six-yard run to lead 14-7, with the McCrane extra point.

In the second quarter, the Wildcats would extend their lead, as Jake Waters hooked up with Curry Sexton on a 17-yard pass play with 12:46 left before halftime to lead 21-7.

K-State opened up with a drive that lasted over four minutes. With a little over 10 minutes remaining in the third period, Waters hit Tyler Lockett on a 20-yard pass play to extend their lead to 28-7. It would be 31-7 late in the third, after McCrane booted in a 37-yard field goal.

In the fourth quarter, the Cats extended their lead, as Charles Jones ran in his second score of the night on a three-yard run to push the margin to 38-7. Backup quarterback Joe Hubener added another score for Kansas State with 9:28 remaining, as he entered the end zone from a yard out to extend the lead to 45-7. Oklahoma State (5-4, 3-3) would get a pick six two minutes later from Ramon Richards to cut the Wildcat lead to 45-14. Matthew McCrane put the final points on the board with a 53-yard field goal with 4:49 left to make the final 48-14.

For the day, Jake Waters was 19-of-28 for 223 yards with two touchdowns. Curry Sexton hauled in nine passes for 159 yards and a touchdown, and Charles Jones had 10 rushes for 43 yards and two scores. K-State ended up with 421 yards of offense, 287 coming through the air.

Oklahoma State’s Daxx Garman was 12-of-23 for 148 yards with two interceptions. Tyreek Hill rushed for 102 yards and a score, while the Cowboys netted only 260 yards of offense, 148 through the air.

Kansas State will play at TCU Saturday night at 6:30, while Oklahoma State will have this Saturday off, before hosting Texas November 15.
