Scott City hosts Lakin in District 16 matchup
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Week two of districts matches two teams who have gone in different directions the last two weeks. Lakin, who is in a must-win situation to keep their playoff chances alive, takes on Scott City, who will host the Broncs for the third straight time in the series.
Lakin enters tonight’s game looking to snap a two-game losing streak, after a 38-36 heartbreaking loss to Cimarron last Friday night at home. After trailing 14-0, the Broncs tied the game at 14 at halftime, and led 36-30 after the third quarter. They were driving down the field late in the game for the go ahead score, when they were stopped inches short of the first down on what was called a fourth down play by the officials. Lakin is led by veterans Caleb Seeger and Matt Armstrong, who have connected on 11 touchdown passes this year.
Scott City keeps on rolling, and picked up their third shutout last Friday night in a 49-0 win at Southwestern Heights. The Beavers led 28-0 after the first quarter, and 42-0 at the break. Brett Meyer started at quarterback for the injured Trey O’Neil, and threw for a touchdown, and had a pick-six on defense. Scott City allowed only 96 yards of offense for the Mustangs, all on the ground.
Scott City and Cimarron are the lone 1-0 teams in District 16, while Lakin and Southwestern Heights are 0-1.
Both teams met up in the Bi-District round of the 3A Playoffs last year, with Scott City winning 43-0. With a Scott City win tonight, Coach Glenn O’Neil would become the winningest coach in program history, passing Dave Dunham.
Kickoff is at 7 pm at Darner Field, pregame at 6:30 on Mix 94 and online at www.westernkansasnews.com/mix94/.
