Hugoton No Match For Pratt

Hugoton, KS (westernkansasnews.com) The optimism Hugoton had after a 33-9 win over Southwestern Heights last week lasted up until Friday night’s kickoff.  Then with sophomore Hunter Kaufman’s return of the opening kickoff for a touchdown all the momentum ended.

Highlights

Pratt (4-3, 0-1 district) used their rushing attack to control the clock and build up a big lead of 28-0 at half en route to a 28-7 win.  After the game Hugoton head coach Todd Fulton was left looking for answers.

Senior Derek Barnard rushed for two touchdowns including a 47 yarder midway through the second quarter in capping off the scoring for the Greenbacks.  Hugoton’s offense struggled through the game.  Junior Parker Titus threw two quick interceptions to Pratt’s Brandon Ruckle and was relieved by Valentino Degollado.  Ruckle added another interception late to make it a three pick night.

Senior Ulises Armendariz with a little more than four minutes left in the third scored the only points for Hugoton (2-5, 0-1 district) with a 30 yard touchdown run.  The Eagles were helped out with two personal foul penalties on the drive.  Pratt’s defense has been stellar this year.  In five of their seven game they’ve allowed seven points or less and in two of the games they have shutouts.

For Hugoton it is back to the drawing board as they get ready for senior night next week against Larned.  Larned lost 40-7 to Holcomb in their district opener.
