District play begins for the Beavers tonight
Scott City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)–It’s like starting a new season over. Everyone is 0-0. Tonight begins district play for the Scott City Beavers, as they hit the road to Southwestern Heights to face the Mustangs.
The Beavers achieved their first goal of the season last Friday night, winning the GWAC title outright, in a 14-7 win over the Ulysses Tigers at Darner Field. Scott City led 7-0 at the break, and 14-0 after three quarter, when the Tigers put up their first and lone score of the game early in the final frame. When it looked like Ulysses was getting all the momentum their way, Marshal Hutchins came up with a big interception, and the Beavers were on their way to their fourth GWAC title in five seasons. Cooper Griffith rushed for 180 yards and a score in the win, and limited the Tigers to just 150 yards on the ground.
For Southwestern Heights, it’s been a tough road the last couple of games. The Mustangs enter tonight’s game with a 4-2 record overall, and a 2-2 record in the Hi-Plains League, following their 33-9 loss to Hugoton last Friday night. Southwestern Heights committed eight turnovers in the game, four of them inside the Eagle 10 yard line. This is their third straight home game, to go along with senior night tonight. The Mustangs were able to rush the ball on Hugoton with 237 yards on the ground between quarterback Jorge DeLa Torre and running back Efrain Chavez.
This will be the first trip to Southwestern Heights for Scott City since 2011, when they defeated the Mustangs to open up district play 46-0. The Beavers have won 16 consecutive district games since week nine of 2008, while the Mustangs have lost seven straight district games, going back to week nine of the 2011 season.
Kickoff is at 7 pm at Southwestern Heights High School, with a 6:30 pregame on Mix 94, online at https://www.westernkansasnews.com/mix94/, or by using your apple or android device with the KSKL app.
