Candidates For Governor Battle Over Education, Economy
Hutchinson, KS (westernkansasnews.com) The first of four scheduled gubernatorial debates took place at the Kansas State Fair Saturday. Governor Sam Brownback vowed to continue making funding for education a top priority.
Brownback’s opponent Democratic Representative Paul Davis believes the governor’s words and his record on education doesn’t add up.
Both candidates also had a lively exchange on how the Kansas economy is shaping up. Davis criticized Brownback for his push to eliminate the income tax.
The State of Kansas is expected to run a budget deficit by 2016. So the question both gubernatorial candidates have to ask themselves is how to turn it around? Democrat Paul Davis wants to stop Governor Sam Brownback’s future tax cuts.
The governor accuses Davis of wanting people to pay more.
Saturday’s debate in Hutch was the first of four scheduled between the two candidates. An average of four major polls gives Davis a 2.5 point lead.
