Law coasts to victory over Kansas
Final Highlights: DC Law vs. Kansas
Dodge City, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-Even after their loss to Wichita two weeks ago, Law Head Coach Sean Ponder stuck to his guns:
“We’re building a dynasty here-there’s no question about it.”
After sitting and simmering over a game they, for all intense purposes should have won against the defending champs, his team came out firing in their regular-season finale.
Dominique Carson scored five times, and Ponder’s defense forced five turnovers as Dodge City stormed to a 62-26 victory over the Kansas Koyotes Saturday at the United Wireless Arena.
“I like the way we’re playing right now,” Ponder said after the game. “This is great for Dodge City, and now we hope to continue on and win a championship.”
The Law (8-4) definitely came out in championship form-moving 25 yards in four plays on their opening drive-capping it off with Carson’s three-yard blast. Jared Wood missed the extra point, and Dodge City’s lead was 6-0.
Kansas responded on their first possession-driving to the Law five-yard line; then the strangest play of the game. On second-and-three, Koyotes quarterback Stanley Jennings was intercepted by Marquis George at the two. Instead of staying on the ground, George picked himself up, fumbled the ball backwards before finally recovering it in the end zone. After a long conference, the officials called a safety-awarding two points to Kansas. That was the only thing that went against them all night.
Following the free kick, Kansas (1-11) marched 10 plays in just over seven minutes to the Dodge City three. But the Koyotes squandered another scoring chance on fourth down when Jennings fumbled the ball out of bounds back at midfield.
The Law took advantage of the miscue-scoring four plays later on Carson’s second rushing touchdown. They followed that up with a spectacular two-point conversion when Josh Floyd broke two tackles in the backfield before hitting Delo Davis along the back wall in the end zone-extending the lead to 14-2 with 28 seconds to play in the first quarter.
After the teams exchanged turnovers, Dodge City got back on track midway through the second frame. Floyd started the drive off with a sling-shot pass to Brandon Venson for a 16-yard gain to the Law 23. Three plays later, it was Carson, who finished with 25 yards on eight carries, barreling in from three yards out to make it 20-2.
Kansas who had four giveaways in the first half alone, turned it over three times in the final three minutes. Jennings fumble that was recovered by Jacorey Quarterman set up Floyd’s 14-yard rushing touchdown. 60 seconds later, former Law running back Ruston Phillips coughed up the ball inside his own five, and George pounced on it at the one. Two plays later, Carson’s one-yard score gave Dodge City a 32-2 half-time lead.
In the second half, the Kansas offense finally came to life-scoring three times: a Jennings to Carlos Cavanagh 15-yard strike; Jennings 14-yard hookup with Larry Wall who beat triple coverage and a meaningless Jeff Coulter 40-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Dodge responded with every sway of momentum with Floyd adding two rushing touchdowns to go along with a four-yard strike to Brandon Venson and a 25-yard scoring pass to Kendrick Ings. Carson punctuated the night with his fifth rushing touchdown: a one-yard score following his electrifying 33-yard kickoff return.
Even with the win, Dodge City was already locked into the fourth seed, which means a third meeting with Wichita in round one of the playoffs on Saturday.
