Lady Beavers Softball swept by Colby on Senior Day
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–On the best weather conditions of the week, the Scott City Beaver softball team hosted league rival Colby for their final home doubleheader of the season Friday. Unfortunately for the home standing Lady Beavers, it was a tough afternoon, as Colby would remain undefeated in GWAC play, with a 15-0 win in four innings and a 14-2 victory.
Colby wasted little time getting the scoring started in the first game, plating six runs in the first inning. The Lady Eagles added four in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth inning for their 15 runs. Despite being shutout, Scott City had their chances to score in three of the four innings. The Lady Beavers left six combined runners on base in three of the four innings in game one. Bre Smull took the loss, giving up 15 runs, 12 earned on 10 hits and struck out two. Krissa Dearden and Mariah Campbell had four of the teams seven hits. For Colby, Kylee Marting struck out three and gave up five hits in the complete game shutout. Darby Sager had a three-run home run in the first inning, and drove in seven runs on three hits.
Game two was much closer early. Colby led 1-0 after the first inning. Scott City had their chances once again in three of the first four innings to get runners on base, but were unable to get a timely hit. The Lady Eagles expanded their lead to 4-0 after two innings and 8-0 after three innings. It would remain 8-0 through four innings of play, when Colby added three runs in the fifth. Facing a possible run-rule loss in the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Beavers tacked on a pair of runs. Krissa Dearden and Nicole Latta drove in a pair of runs in the fifth inning. After a scoreless sixth inning, Colby added three runs in the seventh for the 14-2 victory. Nicole Latta took the loss, giving up 14 runs, 11 earned on 16 hits, with four strikeouts. Amanda Kough had two of the teams five hits.
After Friday, Scott City dropped to 1-9 overall, 1-3 in GWAC play, and will travel to Ulysses Tuesday. Colby improved to 10-4 overall, 8-0 in league play, and hosts Goodland in their next doubleheader.
