Great Bend, Kan (westernkansasnews.com)-When Garden City looks back at the 2014 season, they’ll be proud of many things. But winning three of their first five games away from home is an accomplishment in itself.

Megan Martinez netted two goals and the Buffs stepped on Great Bend’s throats early in a 4-0 win on Thursday. Although not everyone was satisfied.

“We need to work on our communication,” Martinez said. “We have a tendency to play down to our competition.”

Evelyn Rodriguez got Garden City going in the 21st minute on a cross kick from Lauren Walz. The Buffs took a 1-0 lead into the break.

In the second half-it was Martinez extending the Garden City lead with an unassisted goal in the 55th minute. After Amber Miller made it 3-0 in the 66th, Martinez finished off an incredible night by scoring her second goal in the 73rd minute.

“All in all pretty good,” Coach Josue Negron said. “But we’re still trying to find those quality shots.”

Next up: Garden City at Liberal-Monday, April 14-5:30 p.m.

Playing short handed because of some academic issues, the Lady Demons found themselves shorthanded on Thursday night.

“Our backups played pretty good, but it just wasn’t enough,” Head Coach Charles Johnson said.
