On the road: Law hope to tame Bloomington

Bloomington, Ill (westernkansasnews.com)-A week after a thrilling victory over the Salina Bombers at United Wireless Arena, the Dodge City Law will travel to Illinois on Saturday to take on the Bloomington Edge.
Law Head Coach Sean Ponder was proud of how his team played last week and said that it is important for the team to stay on course.
“We had a great team win last week against Salina,” Ponder said. “It is really important that we stay together as a team on Saturday against Bloomington. We showed that we can play as a cohesive unit last week and we need to keep doing that.”
Though the Law came away with a three-point victory against Salina, Ponder said that there is room for improvement.
“No matter how many wins a team has and how good they are there is always room for improvement,” Ponder said. “For us, we’ve made some changes in terms of personnel and we’ve made some adjustments to our schemes. The coaches and I have worked really hard to make sure the players know what they need to be doing in every situation and I think the players are improving.”
In most of the statistical areas Dodge City ranks in the middle of the pack or better. However, in one category, the number of sacks allowed, the Law offensive line ranks dead last.
“In the first four games our QBs were sacked 11 times,” Ponder said. “We can’t allow that to continue, but it’s important to know that we faced some of the best defensive lines in the league during that time.”
“Our blockers up front are big and talented, so I am not really worried too much about that right now, Ponder added. “I believe those guys will be able to show quite a bit of improvement during the final two-thirds of the season.”
Most importantly, Ponder said, is that the coaches have emphasized the importance of paying attention to the details.
“Through the first four games of the season, most of the mistakes we have made have been little things,” Ponder said. “The problem is that sometimes little mistakes can have big consequences. Our goal as a team is to consistently play at high level and continue to strive for perfection. We’re going to take on one opponent at a time and keep working at it.”
