Scott City splits with Colby
Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)-Playing in their final games before the Paul Wintz/Tom Bowen Orange & Black Classic next week in Colby, the Scott City Beavers and Colby Eagles earned a split Friday night at Scott Community High School. The Lady Eagles snapped a two-game losing streak with a 44-19 win over the Lady Beavers, while the Scott City boys extended their win streak to six, with a 64-35 win.
For Scott City early on in the girls game, it looked as though the Lady Beavers were going to win a first quarter for the first time all season. After jumping out to a 4-0 lead about 90 seconds in, Scott City would go scoreless for nearly five minutes. During that span, Colby scored seven straight and never relinquished the lead, taking an 11-6 lead after the first quarter. The Lady Eagle lead eventually grew to 25-13 at half, using a 14-7 second quarter run. In the second half, Scott City could only score six points, and scored three in the third and fourth periods. Colby (4-5, 2-3 GWAC) got 13 points from Haileigh Shull, and 12 from Brenly Terrell. Scott City (1-6, 0-3) didn’t have anyone score double figures, but were led in scoring by Riley Hawker with eight points, all coming in the first half.
In the finale, Scott City was able to put together nice runs to finish off the Eagles early on. Runs of six in a row twice pushed the Beavers to a 25-12 lead halfway through the second quarter, and it eventually grew to a 37-19 halftime lead, thanks to a 7-2 run in the final 3:21 of the half. Scott City would blow the game open, as they started off the first 3:35 of the third quarter on a 7-2 run, and built a 50-26 lead heading into the final period. The Beavers scored the first seven fourth quarter points, and a running clock would be in effect with 5:21 remaining with the score at 57-26. Colby (0-9, 0-5) scored nine of the games 16 final points after that, as Scott City (6-1, 4-0) cruised to the 29-point win. Leading the way for the Beavers was Trey O’Neil with 20 points, while Brett Meyer pitched in 11. They had three other score at least six points. Colby also had two in double figures, as Marc Bremenkamp finished with 14, while Luke Cox had 11 points.
