Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Beavers kicked off their 2013 playoff run with a 43-0 win over the Lakin Broncs Tuesday night at Darner Field in the Bi-District Round of the Class 3A playoffs. It was the Beavers’ third shutout win in four games, and the fifth of the season.

Scott City got on the board on their opening drive on an eight play, 63-yard drive in 3:34, capped off by a Wyatt Kropp three-yard run. Trey O’Neil hit Brayden Strine for the two-point conversion to make it 8-0 Beavers, which would be the score after the first 12 minutes of play.

The Beavers scored 21 second quarter points, 14 of them coming in the final 57 seconds of the first half. Their second score of the night would see Sloan Baker run it in from three yards out with 10:15 left before the break. Tre Stewart knocked in the PAT to make it 15-0 Beavers. That drive would last five minutes and would cover 78 yards on 12 plays. On fourth down and 13 at the Lakin 16 with 57 seconds left in the second period, Brett Meyer, who was originally lined up as a receiver to the left, took the pitch from O’Neil, and from behind the lineman blocking, tossed it to Strine, who caught it about eight yards in the back of the end zone to make it 21-0 Scott City, and the lead would be pushed to 22-0 after the Stewart extra point kick.

Following a Bronc fumble, the Beavers converted yet another fourth down play to set up their final score of the first half. Strine would catch another pass, this time it was off a deflection at the Lakin one on fourth and 14 from the 33 yard line. One play after a spike to stop the clock, Baker found the end zone for the second time, and Stewart kicked in his third extra point to make it 29-0 Scott City at the break.

Lakin would throw an interception on their opening drive of the second half, and the Beavers would turn it into points. At the 7:55 mark of the third quarter, Trey O’Neil rushed it in from two yards away, and Stewart’s PAT pushed the lead to 36-0.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Chantz Yager would help cap off the scoring with a four-yard run, and Stewart’s extra point made the final 43-0.

The Scott City defense was solid again, as they forced six turnovers, four of them interceptions, and limited the Broncs to 116 yards of total offense.

Fort the Beaver offense, they ended up with 275 yards on the ground, and another 98 through the air for a total of 373 yards of offense. Wyatt Kropp finished unofficially with 85 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown. Trey O’Neil was 4-of-10 passing for 66 yards, and Meyer completed two passes for 28 yards.

Scott City improved to 9-1 on the year, while Lakin ended their season at 5-5.

The Beavers will travel to Phillipsburg in the Regional round of the playoffs on Saturday. Phillipsburg held off a late charge from Sacred Heart, and won 27-20 at Glenn Martin Stadium in Salina on Tuesday. The Panthers are also 9-1, with their lone loss coming to Beloit in week seven.
